According to the last estimates made by the CNC, admissions in theaters reached 19.4 million in December 2012, down from 25.3 million in December 2011 (-23.3%). After an exceptional year in 2011, admissions totalled 204.26 million in 2012. This result remains higher than the ten-year average of 193.2 million.

The market share for French films reached more than 40% in 2012

In 2012, the market share for French films remains high with 40.2% (40.9% in 2011). In 2012, admissions for French films accounted for 82,03 million admissions, i.e. a decrease of 7.7% compared to 2011. This result is higher than the ten-year average (75.43 milllion).
 

Decrease in admissions for American films

In 2012, American films gathered 92.54 million admissions, i.e. a decrease of 7.0% year-on-year, and above the ten-year average of 90.78 million. The market share for American films reached 45.3% in 2012 against 45.8% in 2011.
Other films accounted for 14.5% of the market in 2012, against 13.2% in 2011. Admissions rose by 3.3% to 29.68 million above the ten-year average of 26.85 million.
 

Three-quarter of cinema screens are offering digital projections

Full conversion to digital by French cinema screens will be achieved in 2013.  At the end of 2012, more than 4 800 screens were digital (more than 88% of total screens). More than 1 500 cinemas were equipped in the digital format with at least one digital projection equipment (more than 76% of total cinemas).

In 2012, the release of films in 3D was stable. 42 films were released (in 2D and 3D) against 43 films in 2011, 23 in 2010, 16 in 2009. Films in 3D accounted for 48 million admissions (25 % of total admissions).
 

12 films registered more than three million admissions

In 2012, the number of films registering more than three million admissions is increasing to become the second highest-level in ten years. 12 films registered more than three million admissions. 18 films achieved more than two million admissions in 2012. As in 2011, 52 films attracted more than one million admissions, the highest number in ten years. 90 films totalled over 500 000 admissions.

20 French films registered more than one million admissions

In 2012, a high number of French films attracted a wider audience. Four French movies registered more than three million admissions in 2012 (2 in 2011). 7 French films reached two million admissions in 2012 against 4 in 2011. 33 French films registered more than 500 000 admissions against 35 in 2011.

Eight American films registered more than three million admissions

In 2012, eight American films reached more than three million admissions (5 in 2011). The number of American films over two million admissions decreased to 11 films. The number of films that drew more than 500 000 admissions also decreased (51 in 2012 against 59 in 2011). American films over one million admissions increased (32 in 2012, 28 in 2011).
